Renegade Pictures made a Sky TV series about Woburn Safari Park. Working with animals they were aware that they would need a silent and portable power source sufficient to power their 3D camera equipment. UPS’ Moxibane Hydrogen Fuel Cell generator was perfect for the job. A 3D camera requires more power than a conventional camera, but a hydrogen cell generator can provide this extra power whilst still being small and mobile enough to fit on the back of the army truck the team were using.
Claire Bugden, Production Manager at Renegade Pictures said, “Previously we’ve used generators to provide power for all of our equipment, but they are very noisy and can be unreliable. We’re there to film the animals so it’s really important that we don’t disturb them and cause them any distress. The fuel cell is the ideal source of power for this project, it’s silent when running and is environmentally friendly so it fits with the safari park’s clean image. We couldn’t have done this project without the fuel cell.”
Tom Sperrey, Managing Director at UPS Systems commented, “The Mobixane is an exciting product for the broadcast industry. Quiet in nature, easy to transport, cheap to maintain and long runtimes mean it’s the perfect portable power source for film and TV use where cameras and lighting can demand a lot of power.”
The portable hydrogen fuel cell can generate up to 2.5kW of power, enough for all the team’s equipment. The fuel cell was supplied with sufficient hydrogen storage to run at peak load for up to eight hours. Simply changing hydrogen cylinders would enable the film crew to run the unit for any length of time had they needed to.
