Could your pension help save the planet?

The decision on where you keep, save and invest your money is more powerful than you think

So you’ve switched your home to 100% renewable energy, you’ve thought consciously about the future holidays abroad you might take, you’ve ditched single use plastic and you’ve stopped your fast fashion habit. So far, so good. But what’s next? Have you thought about your pension?

Aligning our pensions to our values is one of the most impactful steps we can take to build the healthy world we want to retire into and that future generations will want to enjoy.

There is £3 trillion in UK pensions, and that is money owned by all of us. That’s more than enough to help deliver the Paris Climate Goals or drive a green recovery from the Covid pandemic. But while investing in many vital businesses, UK pension funds have also been fuelling some of the most unsustainable industries on the planet. This is of particular importance for UK businesses. Each year, £20 billion is invested through company pensions schemes, but only 5% of businesses align these contributions with their values or sustainability targets. This is a huge gap, and an enormous opportunity for impact
