November 21 2023: The Screen New Deal Transformation Plan for Wales sets out plans for addressing energy use and waste

BAFTA albert today outlined the key recommendations from the Screen New Deal (SND) Transformation Plan for Wales, seeing out a path to a sustainable future for the film and high-end
television industries alongside its second annual Production Summit, held today in Cardiff.

This landmark report covers the changes to transport, energy use, waste and culture needed to meet
net zero targets, distilling these actions into a clear timeline.

July 5 2023: Studio sustainability data revealed by BAFTA albert

BAFTA albert, the film and TV consortium for sustainability, has today released its Studio Sustainability Standard Report, providing analysis on sustainability data from studios across the UK and USA.

Drawing from data submitted from 12 participating studios across 2021/22, the Studio Sustainability Standard Report provides analysis of the current collective impact and efforts reduce them of the studios – as well as a roadmap towards a resilient and sustainable entertainment industry.

9 June 2023: albert enters a first of its kind international partnership with Sustainable Screens Australia (SSA)

BAFTA albert, the leading organisation for environmental sustainability in the screen industries, and Sustainable Screens Australia (SSA), the Australia based, industry-led initiative addressing the growing need to reduce the screen industry’s environmental impact, have announced a first of its kind partnership. The albert Toolkit, comprising a carbon calculator created by and for the screen industries and albert’s Carbon Action Plan framework will be localized for the Australian market. Under a new albert admin license, the Australian screen sector will be able to establish its own sustainability standards or certification processes using the albert tools.

16 May 2023: albert and BFI partner for film industry sustainability

The BFI today announces funding to two industry leaders to provide a range of resources to help industry tackle the climate and ecological crisis. and albert has been awarded £286,955 and Julie’s Bicycle have been awarded £299,800  of National Lottery funding over three years (2023-2026) through the new BFI National Lottery Sustainable Screen Fund to support all BFI National Lottery awardees in building environmental understanding and action on positive environmental change.

3rd Nov 2021: Media CEOs Pledge to Help Audiences Navigate Climate Change

In an industry first, 12 broadcasters and streamers have signed up to The Climate Content Pledge . The signatories – who represent over 70% of time UK audiences spend watching TV and film – are committing to using their content to help audiences understand what tackling climate change might mean for them, as well as inspire and inform sustainable choices.

27th Oct 2021: Broadcasters collaborate at COP26 to show the power of television to inspire climate action

An inspiring programme of events for COP26 is planned by BBC, C4, ITV, SKY and STV with BAFTA’s albert, alongside sustainability partner Natural Capital Partners. These events will showcase the UK broadcasters’ radical collaboration in sustainability through albert both on and off screen, for the past decade, and will be available for live streaming to a wider audience.

albert releases its third ‘Subtitles to Save the World’ report looking at how often climate change and our solutions to tackling it were mentioned on our TV screens in 2020.

Climate change mentions have decreased slightly since 2019 during a turbulent year which reflects the impact of lockdown on both the TV production industry and wider society.

Words associated with positive individual actions have increased but there are fewer associated with the systemic change needed to help us reach net zero.

BAFTA announces that Shed Media, NBCUniversal International Television Production and UKTV will join the BAFTA Albert Consortium, the industry body for environmental sustainability within television production. The three companies join existing members ITV, Sky, BBC, Channel 4, Kudos, IMG, Twofour, Endemol and all3media.

Kevin Price, Chief Operating Officer at BAFTA, who gave an update on the progress of Albert – the UK’s first carbon calculator for the film and television industry – a year after launch.
