BAFTA albert and the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance launch global guidance to help productions track emissions in production

Have you ever wondered what scopes 1,2 and 3 are and how they relate to your production emissions?

BAFTA albert and the Sustainable Entertainment Alliance (S.E.A.) are lifting the curtain on this topic with the launch of a global guide for the screen industries to define and track Scope 1 & 2 emissions on set.

This comes after guidance was released in 2024 by S.E.A. that sets out what counts as Scope 3 emissions in productions. Together, both documents provide a full picture of what productions should be tracking and to align with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol and other standards.

The GHG protocol categorises emissions into three categories; Scope 1, 2 & 3. This allows organisations to account for their emissions, track impact and identify areas where they can make reductions. Until now guidance about what counts within each of the different categories has not existed for the screen industries.

Working together with broadcasters, streamers, studios and production companies across the UK and USA, BAFTA albert and S.E.A. have developed a framework that any production can use to help account for their carbon emissions. This guidance will also help productions more accurately and consistently meet the growing reporting requirements of broadcasters and studios.

The new guidance has also been assessed by ICF International ensuring that it is science backed and meets global reporting standards.

Both the Scope 1&2 paper released today and the Scope 3 paper, released in 2024, break down what emissions to include in each scope, who is responsible for those emissions and how to account for them. The papers cover the full production journey from pre-production to filming and beyond to post-production. Those involved in the production ecosystem will find practical examples of how to track and report emissions.

The papers will also help productions create a Greenhouse Gas Declaration (an inventory and clear record of emissions) that can be used for reports or in tracking tools like the BAFTA albert Toolkit or the PEACH and PEAR in the USA.

“The quality of emissions data we receive from productions who use the BAFTA albert Toolkit varies greatly. Without consistent, high-quality data tracking our industry will continue to struggle to make a meaningful impact when it comes to cutting emissions. Today’s release alongside the Scope 3 paper that S.E.A. released previously provides a vital global framework that is accessible and can be used by any production to create a consistent approach to tracking emissions. The formula is simple; if every production takes a consistent approach when tracking emissions, we will be able to make better decisions to decarbonise and see a noticeable reduction in the impact our industry is having on the environment.”

— Matt Scarff, BAFTA albert, Managing Director

“This guidance arrives as momentum around sustainable production is accelerating, and it gives our industry a clear, GHG Protocol–aligned way to define and track their Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, so that we’re truly comparing apples to apples across production footprints. With consistent, science‑backed data, studios, streamers, and suppliers can make better decisions—and cut emissions faster.”

— Sam Read, Sustainable Entertainment Alliance, Executive Director

The papers will also be supported by a series of webinars coming in early 2026. Each webinar will break down different elements of production emissions and lift the curtain on how to track and what to track.
