Studios around the globe are becoming even more sustainable

The BAFTA albert Studio Sustainability Standard has been released and reveals that studios across the globe are taking the right steps to become even more sustainable. 31 Studios took part in the standard this year, submitting data from across six categories and the average score of the studios taking part rose from 70% in 2024 to 77% in 2025.

The Studio Sustainability Standard was first introduced three years ago with the aim of creating an industry-wide mechanism for studios to track and engage with a continual improvement cycle on their environmental performance. The standard encourages studios to focus on key areas in their operations where they can make systemic improvements and reduce their environmental impact. The studios are marked against six categories which include:

  • Climate: Both emissions reduction and resilience to the impacts of climate change.
  • Circularity: Minimising impacts of materials and preventing waste.
  • Nature: Green space, food and broader ecosystem impacts.
  • People: Health, wellbeing and community benefits.
  • Management: How sustainability is managed, including reporting, audits, training.
  • Data: Collecting and monitoring quality sustainability-related data.

The information provided against each of these categories is then assessed by an independent evaluator and studios are awarded a grade which ranges from ‘Participated’ to ‘Outstanding’. Of the 31 studios that took part in this year’s standard, 21 were awarded a grade of ‘Very Good’ or higher and three of those studios were awarded a grade of ‘Outstanding’.

This year studios performed well across all categories. Some of the highlights included:

  • 14 studios achieved a perfect score against the requirements laid out in management with a rise in training for studio employees and the implementation of sustainability criteria in many supply chains.
  • Studios did well in promoting mental health programs (97%) and cycle parking (94%), showing a strong commitment to employee well-being.
  • Over half of studios (61%) have set up re-use programs for sets and props, while many are working with charities to donate materials to reduce waste.
  • The shift to LED lighting across studios has been a game changer, with efficiency scores going from 55% to 71% for house lighting and from 66% to 84% for stage lighting.

“Studios from across the globe have stepped up in our industry’s fight against climate change. This year we’ve seen more investment in innovation, more support for local communities and vital education programmes being implemented to train people on how they can tackle environmental impact in their roles. Studios play such an important role in the production of content and it is reassuring to see so many are committed to making a difference for the future of our planet.”
